In working with hair braiders, I received a number of questions. One was, “how can I apply for unemployment?” This is a seemingly simple question, but it can be overwhelming if one doesn’t know where to start. There are many questions involved and lots of documentation required.

In order to help solve this question, I sent my mother a link to the NY Department of Labor’s site. Here, there are directions and resources to apply for unemployment and search for additional work. It can still be difficult because there are many technical questions and answers and the hotline can often be congested, but I was told that it was comforting that I took the time to send the link; it meant that I was, in a way, volunteering to serve as a source of help.
